Stow Those Valuables!

When hiking, are your valuables safe in your car?

Please read this letter below
from our Treasurer of the GHTC

Henry Graupner, Treasurer of the Guelph Hiking Trail Club, had a telephone call from one of the officers at the OPP.  His letter to our President is as follows:

I had an interesting call today from an OPP officer, Heidi Pouch (?) at 519-843-4240.

She reported that there had been a significant increase in reported thefts from cars parked at junctions of trails and roads. She mentioned particularly the cars on the side of Watson Road where our trail used to run east on the old radial line, but also included in her advisory all parking at trail heads/crossings. She was making similar contact with other groups
like GORBA.

She described how she had seen cars at these parking spots with expensive stuff (e.g., laptops) openly on display in the cars.  I pointed out that we could/would advise our GHTC members but had no possible way of contacting non-members and dog-walkers that used our and other public trails.

Since it is probably too late to put something in the newsletter, I suggest an advisory be put on the website right away.

So, stow your valuables very carefully when you leave your vehicle to hike on the trails.
