From the trailhead, we’ll follow the stunning Roberts Side Trail to the north. This
trail goes through mature woods, passes a pond and begins to climb the
escarpment. It crosses a wide boardwalk which protects the habitat of the
endangered Jefferson Salamander around the edges of the shallow pond. It
joins the main Bruce Trail at the edge of the Silver Creek Valley and returns to
the trailhead. We cross Fallbrook Trail and continue along the Bruce Trail until
we join the Great Esker Side Trail. The Great Esker is situated in a huge
expanse of publicly owned land that includes Scottsdale Farm as well as the
Terra Cotta Conservation Areas. We start this trail by walking up a moderate
incline that runs along a ridgetop, which is the esker (a gavel ridge left behind by
a glacier). There is a magnificent view over a valley of tamarack trees. We’ll
cross Silver Creek several times and enjoy beautiful scenery and interesting
trees before joining the wilderness of the Bruce Trail passing babbling brooks,
lush mature forests and incredible escarpment rocks!
